Chief Prosecutor of the Violent Crimes Unit
In 2013, Leland was appointed to lead the newly formed Violent Crimes Unit in Jefferson County. By working with top members in law enforcement from the US Attorney’s Office, FBI, ATF and LMPD, Leland developed many relationships and learned how cases are developed and potential targets are assessed. With a focus on gun cases and violent crime, Leland has seen both sides and uses that knowledge to help his clients navigate the muddy waters of criminal prosecution.

In 2002, Leland began his legal career working for the Jefferson County Attorney, now Court of Appeals Judge, Irv Maze. Leland handled a large caseload consisting of serious felony arraignments and preliminary hearings, possession and trafficking of drugs, child support, traffic, no insurance, speeding and DUI cases, gun possession, warrant cases, domestic violence, paternity and juvenile court cases.
Complex Jury Trials
Commonwealth vs. Susan Lukjan 1/2: Trial victories in two separate, three week long jury trials, for arson against a woman accused of burning down her St. Matthews business.
CW v. Angela Baumia: Secured the first jury trial murder conviction for a DUI related death in Jefferson County in 15 years.
CW v. Jason Stinson: Nationally followed trial involving the death of a 15-year-old PRP football player during practice. This case changed heat and water rules in youth sports across the country.
CW v. Reginald Grider: I obtained a victorious jury verdict and a juvenile received a life sentence for capital murder. The life sentence was upheld after an appeal to the Kentucky Supreme Court.
